McGill Work-Study Program

The Work-Study Program helps students with financial need access on-campus jobs. Approximately 950 students participate annually, earning $3.4 million collectively.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be registered full-time in a degree program
  • Have applied for and be receiving maximum government aid
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be in satisfactory academic standing

Application Timeline

  • Applications open: July 1st
  • Early deadline: Early August (recommended)
  • Most positions: 10-15 hours per week
  • Must reapply each academic year

McGill Career Planning Service (CaPS)

CaPS supports career development through counselling, workshops, and job placement services.

Academic Support Services

  • McGill Writing Centre: Essay writing support and tutoring
  • Tutor Matching Program: $18/hr undergrad, $22/hr grad tutors

  • Peer Tutoring: Free for eligible students

International Student Employment Guide

International students can work both on-campus and off-campus, but must ensure they have proper documentation.

Work Authorization Requirements

  • Study Permit: Must include work authorization remark
  • Full-time Status: Must be registered for 12+ credits
  • Off-campus Work: Maximum 24 hours/week during term (as of Nov 2024)
  • On-campus Work: Unlimited hours during term and breaks

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

  • Required for Employment: 9-digit number needed to work in Canada
  • Application: Online through Service Canada (recommended)
  • Timeline: Apply before starting work or within 3 days
  • Cost: Free for first-time applications

⚠️ Important Updates (2024)

  • • Off-campus work hours increased to 24 hours/week maximum
  • • Post-Graduation Work Permit now requires language proficiency (CLB Level 7)
  • • PGWP applications no longer accepted at the border
  • • Co-op work permits should be applied for 6 months in advance
